Thur and Fri at Wigan

Thur 5th and Fri 6th May

Thursday morning, about 11am, Peter arrived for the day and night on his way to Scotland. As the pub didn’t open until 2pm we had some lunch then set off for a walk down the locks. George gave up after about 4 locks and I had to take him back to the boat! It was quite hot and we had passed the pub so he decided enough was enough!

The three of us then continued down to lock 78 at Rose Bridge before we decided to come back up. Obviously we went to the pub on the way back as it was now open. Peter seemed to like the beer with the funny flavour!

Friday morning Peter left to continue his journey to Scotland. We and B and B decided not to tackle the locks that day so we went in to Wigan on the bus (£3 for us non fare dodgers!) and do some shopping.  Ken and Barry wanted to go to the fishing tackle shop so we found that first. It was decided that as it turned out to be not too far from the bus station, rather than carry a load of maggots round all day, they would return for them later.

On the way to the tackle shop we noted the location of the Wetherspoon’s for future reference. From the market and then Greenwood’s the chaps ended up with matching straw hats and nearly matching jackets! Then we had some hot Cornish pasties (2 for £1, bargain) after which Ken and Barry sat in the shopping centre while Barbara and I tackled BHS. We had threatened to go to M&S as well but gave them a reprieve and we all went to the Wetherspoon’s we spotted earlier.

After a while we decided that Barbara and I would got to M&S and Wilko’s while Ken and Barry went back to the tackle shop (we couldn’t see the point in all of us going back up there) and we would meet at the bus station. I was pleased to find exactly the trousers I wanted in M&S and I got some pillows for less than half price. We got the practical stuff in Wilco’s then, on a slight detour to Bon Marche I found something else I had been looking for for a while as well! Barbara found a few things in there and got a £5 discount. And the chaps got – maggots!
