Littleborough to Summit (1 mile in 4 hours!)

Wednesday 23rd May

Another epic journey today has brought us 1 mile from Littleborough to Summit. The only problem we encountered on this journey (no trips down the weed hatch today) was a lack of water in the pounds, especially when we reached the 2 locks which have subsided and can only be used singly. Here, because we needed two lots of water for each lock, we had to ‘batch’ (a term used by the BW lady) some water down from the pounds above so we could continue. All this took quite some time making it nearly 4 hours from the time we left to when we moored at Summit.

It hasn’t been quite so windy today but it has been a bit chilly when the sun has gone in. It’s nice up here and so quiet. With the moorings being on the offside we don’t have anyone walking past. Not that there are many people walking past on the towpath anyway. George was pleased this afternoon because we took him for a little toddle to the Summit Inn. He hasn’t been out anywhere since Chadderton (except along the towpath) because the weather has been too bad for walking and sitting outside pubs with your dog!

We are staying here another night and going over the summit on Friday. The forecast isn’t very good so Ken and I are going in to Rochdale on the bus tomorrow.
