Preston Brook to Acton Swing Bridge via the Anderton Boat Lift

Saturday 18th June

Here we are on the River Weaver, having travelled 11 miles, 2 locks (one single stop lock and one large manned lock) 3 tunnels (all crooked) and the Anderton Boat Lift, from Preston Brook on the T and M to Acton Swing Bridge on the Weaver. We arrived here about 3pm having left at 8-15am.

It was a bit of a slow journey from Preston Brook to Anderton because the canal is narrow and twisty. There were also a lot of moored boats to negotiate and the Black Prince boat yard as well. There were also the 3 tunnels at Preston Brook, Saltersford and Barnton. When we got to Anderton we went for a cup of tea at the boat lift cafe, then moved on to the holding moorings to wait for our passage. I really enjoyed the trip down in the lift and took a load of photos of course!

From the bottom of the lift we made our way to Saltersford Locks and then on to Acton Swing Bridge. We retraced some of the journey we made on the T and M this morning because the Weaver runs parallel with the T and M for a while so we had already been through Saltersford and Acton Bridge on the canal and now we were going through the same places on the river.

It hasn’t been too bad weatherwise, changeable I think you could call it. We did manage to sit outside the pub for a while when we got here but it was a bit chilly. There were heaters in the smoking area and a very useful sign too (see photo) so we sat in there with George. As neither of us could be bothered to cook tonight Ken and I went back later for dinner.

I’m not sure what we are doing tomorrow yet.
