Chirk to Llangollen

Thursday 22nd September

Today we have travelled to Llangollen, a journey of about 6.5 miles from Chirk. We have come over the Chirk Aqueduct, through the Chirk tunnel and over the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct. We were following a Welsh Lady hire boat over the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct and very nearly came to a standstill as they were going so slow. I know people like to take in the scenery when going over the aqueduct but we were in danger of getting charged mooring fees! It took 20 minutes to get over there and Ken, who is afraid of heights, would have liked to have spent a bit less time 125 ft in the air.

Fortunately the hire boat, which was still creeping along after we left the aqueduct, let us pass when we got to a suitable place. The rest of the journey went well and we arrived at the mooring basin in Llangollen by lunchtime. B and B, who had stopped at Trevor for diesel, arrived a bit later.

We took George to the Bridge End Hotel, a fair walk for him, including a very steep set of steps, down to the town. The sun was shining and it was very pleasant sitting there people watching. We had a nice chat with a motorcyclist who sat next to us. He gave us some local information about some of the shops in the town, useful even though we have been here before and about Horseshoe Falls, the ruined Valle Crucis Abbey and the Pondarosa Cafe (where the bikers congregate for Sunday lunch apparently).

Tomorrow we are going to walk up to the Horseshoe falls because we didn’t go there last year, we went past on the steam train but couldn’t see much. We may take in the ruined abbey as well but I think the cafe is a bit too far for us to walk.
