Thursday 12th August
We awoke this morning to yet more rain so we decided to stay at Otherton/Penkridge. I had the European ironing mountain to tackle and other domestic duties and Ken had to do something exciting with his stern greaser!
After yesterday’s panic to get through Penkridge Lock before they shut it, when Ken went to get a paper this morning he discovered the lock had only been shut for about an hour and a half and they could fix the problem without shutting it again. However, we didn’t see many places we would have liked to moor up, even if there had been enough depth of water in the canal, before we got here so we would probably have come this far anyway.
George took us for a nice walk up the towpath to the Cross Keys at lunchtime, where there was an awning for us to sit under. This was just as well as it was raining more often than not. He got under the bench to make sure he kept dry.
Tomorrow (Friday the 13th, aaargh!) we are doing another 10 mile, 6 lock day, which will take us on to the Shropshire Union canal. Hopefully this journey won’t take as long as yesterday’s.
