Back in Chester

Saturday 4th September

We have been back in Chester since yesterday afternoon, having left the relative peace of our rural mooring of Thursday night. It has been anything but peaceful here I can tell you. As we are opposite Telford’s Warehouse again it is only to be expected I suppose but the noise emanating from said establishment last night was phenomenal! The patio area was absolutely packed, about 90/100 people were out there spilling along the canal side and standing in the car park. There was some sort of entertainment on as well, although we couldn’t hear what, over the hubbub of people talking (very loudly) and the occasional smash of empties going in to the skip.

And it went on until about 2 am! We didn’t go to bed until 1 am as there was very little point in going to bed too early with all that going on. Fortunately tonight, apart from one very loud lady, who hopefully has now departed, it is a lot quieter. Whinge, whinge, whinge!

This morning we had hardly surfaced when Tom from ‘Best Mate’, who was moored behind us, came round telling us that a boat had caught fire last night, just a little way back along the canal and was completely gutted. Apparently there had been 5 fire engines there but due to the activity at the pub we hadn’t noticed anything! We had spoken to the chap who owned the boat when we came back from Ellesmere Port yesterday. He had been returning with his shopping when we came past. Luckily he was not on the boat when it caught fire. According to Tom and another chap who is moored up here, who had both been on there yesterday, the electrical system was lethal,  so they weren’t surprised it had gone up in smoke. Can’t help feeling sorry for the chap though.

After this Ken did the black painting on the other side of our boat as we are now the other way round. It looks very nice at the moment but of course we haven’t been any where yet!

This afternoon we completed our walk of the city walls, it was all very interesting. We also did a bit more shopping. It’s amazing what you realise you need when you can actually see the shops! There were various buskers in the streets, most notable of these were a group of young men absolutely murdering ‘My Generation’ by The Who and a couple of North American Indians playing pipes. The former should not give up their day jobs (if they have any) and the latter were excellent.

A quick squizz at the weather forecast has decided us to move on tomorrow before there is another burst of gale force winds and rain, remember what happened when we arrived here last Sunday, (although our new satellite dish is chained to the roof!) so we will be off back to Christleton I expect.
