Beeston to Calveley

Tuesday 7th September

We have been blessed with much better weather today (only one huge thunder storm this afternoon) and have travelled 4 miles and 6 locks to Calveley. We started off travelling with another boat which left the moorings at the same time as us but at the Iron Lock we got separated because only one boat at a time can use this lock and they never caught us up again. We had another go at the Bunbury Shuffle at the staircase locks but there were only 2 of us this time so it was a bit easier.

On arrival at Calveley we moored up North of bridge 104 right at the end of the 48 hour moorings, quite a way from the bridge, to give our fat lazy dog a bit of a toddle to The Davenport. We thought the pub was half a mile in to the village but it was just over the canal and railway bridges on the main road (the distance on their sign is wrong) so it wasn’t a very long walk in the end anyway! There was a field of llamas on the way, all sporting funky hairdos!

On the way back we passed a chap mooring up a boat we didn’t recognise but it turned out to be John the Australian chap we had met on the Caldon who told the tale about the mouldy scones he got from the bakery in Whaley Bridge! He had just bought this new boat last week. We got invited in, by his wife Jenny, for a look and as a bonus, got tea and fruit cake (unmouldy)! Their boat is very nice and is currently called ‘Little Ellie’ but they are going to rename it ‘Aussie Mozzie’. They have another boat in Australia called ‘Jumbuck’, on the River Murray. While we were on their boat there was a huge thunder storm, the only one of the day.

Tomorrow we start the Middlewich arm of the Shroppie and the current plan is to go up on to the T and M as far as the Anderton Boat Lift, just for a look, then get back to Audlem in time for Peter and Tim’s visit in 2 weeks time.
