Monday 11th April
The weather has taken a bit of a turn for the worse with rain at lunchtime today and a chiily breeze. We have not moved on today, enjoying the countryside and relative peace and quiet following the busy weekend.
This morning we did a few jobs then we took George over the canal, via the old railway bridge, into the woods opposite. He hadn’t been for a proper walk for a few days and was quite enthusiastic, even when we started to go uphill! He seemed like he was enjoying it anyway.
Later on Ken and I decided to walk into the village of Baildon which didn’t look very far away on the map. It was 10 minutes walk to the swing bridge and a further 5 minutes to the main road. We went a few hundred yards in both directions along the main road before realising the village had to be straight over and up the hill. That wasted about 10 minutes! It was about another 25 minutes walk (all of which was up uphill!) to get to the Premier Shop. We did pass a small convenience store on the way but it didn’t open until 2pm (strange).
It had started to rain by this time and a cold wind had sprung up. What we needed was a pub to shelter in until it stopped. There was one close by but the lady in the shop said there were nicer ones in the village which was another 5 minutes walk, up a practically vertical hill!
So off we trudged to the village centre and found 3 pubs. The first one we went into, The Angel, had sold out of real ale but we were glad to sit down so we had one drink. After our rest we went to The Bull’s Head but they didn’t open until 1-30pm (strange). So we went to The Malt Shovel and had a lovely pint of Old Speckled Hen. By the time we had finished it had stopped raining, hurrah! As it was down hill all the way back it only took 40 minutes to get home!
Tomorrow we are off to Shipley and Saltaire.
