Riley Green to Adlington

Tuesday 3rd May

Today we were on the move again travelling 8 miles and the 7 locks at Johnson’s Hillock to just outside Adlington. On the way we passed Botany Bay, now a large shopping complex but once the site of several mills, near Chorley. The term Botany Bay originated from the time of the construction of the Lancaster Canal (now incorporated in to the L and L) when the area played host to the canal workers. Due to the nature of the navvies living there locals came to regard it as a place to be avoided, like the penal colony of Botany Bay in Australia.

We are moored on the permanent moorings about half a mile from Adlington. A chap who lives here told us they are never used so it would be ok. When we got here Ken was very useful (again) and repositioned our front fender because it was always at a jaunty angle and Barry said he was fed up with seeing it on the sosh every time he turned round (he is usually in front of us)! It now looks lovely!

Later we all walked in to town and found a convenient Coop and a nice pub of course. We also found a chandlery but it is closed on Tuesdays. However, on our way to Wigan tomorrow we can moor up outside and go again when it is open.
