Monday 20th June
Hoorah, at last a lovely warm, sunny day! It’s just like Summer – oh, it is Summer! But what’s this? Oh, it’s raining again already.
We have travelled all of 1.5 miles today, leaving behind the sewage outfall at Dutton Locks and are moored at Barnton. Well, sort of between Saltersford and Barnton, just upstream of Saltersford Locks. We spotted this place on the way down and decided if it was free we would moor here on the way back. It certainly is a beautiful spot here and we are staying here tomorrow as well.
We all walked into Barnton village this afternoon and found a post office, convenience store, pharmacy, butchers and a pub. There are several hair dressers there, most of which were closed today. I may try to get something done about my unrult mop tomorrow! The pub was a bit of a disappointment, having run out of real ale and guinness! The barman was a bit odd too, he gave us salt and vinegar crisps instead of cheese and onion – twice!
Before we went to the village we saw the coal and diesel barge on its way to Acton Bridge and the chap said he would stop on the way back in a couple of hours. He did arrive some time later, on foot, his barge having broken down, to tell us he would be back tomorrow morning. We aren’t going anywhere so that’s ideal. The diesel is 82p a litre, very reasonable.
It is now chucking down with rain so Summer has gone already.
