Anderton to Hunts Locks

Friday 5th August

It has been a very pleasant day today, we have only travelled 1.5 miles and after visiting the sanitary station in Northwich we have moored up just below Hunt’s locks. We like it here having spent a few days here last time we were on the Weaver. Northwich town moorings were, as usual, absolutely chocker with boats, some of which were on there when we came last week on the bus and one of which was on there when we came by boat at the end of June!

We walked in to town and visited the market where we bought a spare hoover pipe and nozzle, which incidentally cost more than the whole hoover did in the first place, for when we tackle the dreaded chimney cleaning soon. Ken can also use it to get the cat litter out of the engine compartment, don’t ask!

Talking of my beloved he had a bit of a mooring up ‘mare when we arrived here. Firstly, as he was getting off the boat he got his fleece caught on the hook which holds the back door open and was on the bank but still attatched to the boat by his pocket. Then he caught his foot on the edge of the mooring and his shoe fell off into the river. Then as he was adjusting one of the fenders it too fell off into the river. Luckily both his shoe and the fender were bouyant and easily recovered.

When we wanted to walk into town BW were just about to open the swing footbridge, which takes about an hour to open and close so we had to go over the lock and in to town another way. This turned out to be foruitous because we discovered a paint shop and got some black hammerite for my next project, (after the gas locker lid), which is painting the mushrooms black. Currently they are not very well lacquered brass and look awful, I think they will look good in black. As we are going to have to do the back hatch again (don’t ask) we thought we would do that in black as well this time. Unfortunately the forecast for the weekend is not very good so we won’t be able to get on with our boat tarting up plans. Perhaps we’ll have to go to the pub?
