Day at Acton Bridge

Tuesday 9th August

The weather was marginally better today, in that it didn’t actually rain. It was still windy however and chilly too. We walked to Weaverham which took 35 minutes. It is a village with a row of useful shops, such as a Tesco Express and a Coop, 2 bakers, butchers, pet shop etc and a few take aways as well. There are a couple of pubs too, we went in The Wheatsheaf which was ok except that they ran out of real ale last night and it was a bit ‘local’ if you know what I mean. On the way back to Acton Bridge we stopped at The Riverside, a large foodie pub just up the river, at least they had real ale!

This morning the chap from 2 boats up, who is 87 and boats on his own since the death of his wife 3 years ago, came up for a chat. We had a very interesting time with him talking about various things. He has written several books which he was telling us about.

The chap behind us, from the Lymm cruising club, had broken down. He had a problem with his alternator, something to do with the vibrations from his engine, I don’t know. He said the boat lift was out of order and someone had said it may be 2 days before they can fix it. There wasn’t anything on waterscape about it so I don’t know if that is true or not. If it is true there will be a bit of a backlog of boats waiting for passage. Not least the 14 Lymm boats who are currently on the Weaver and everyone else of course. We don’t know what to do now because we were going to try and go up on Thursday but if we move from here and the lift is not working there may be no where to moor up elsewhere, especially in the vicinity of the lift.

The weather is supposed to be awful tomorrow anyway so maybe we’ll stay here and I will ring the lift and find out what’s going on. Sounds like a plan.
