Acton Bridge to Anderton

Wednesday 10th August

The heavy rain and strong winds, which were forecast for today, were not in evidence first thing this morning so we phoned the boat lift and on discovering that it was now fixed booked a passage for 12-10 pm. The journey was very pleasant actually and the sun nearly came out a couple of times! There were a lot of boats about because of the stoppage with the lift and most moorings were full of people waiting. In fact, we only just managed to squeeze on the holding moorings for the lift as there were boats on there which weren’t going up at the same time as us. One was in the trip boat space and when it arrived to pick up passengers there was a lot of horn blowing and gesticulation from the trip boat driver!

When we got up to the top it started to rain so we decided to moor up asap. We were pleased to find there was a space just through the bridge so we got in it. We had a window of opportunity to take himself for a toddle to the pub later and he actually got there fairly quickly. After we got back the bad weather set in and it has been raining ever since.

We are going to see what the weather is like tomorrow before we decide whether to go to Middlewich or not. The forecast is not very good but then neither was today’s. We aren’t in much of a hurry because we are going to go up the Huddersfield Narrow with B and B, who are leaving Thurmaston on Friday. We are probably going to meet somewhere on the Maccie and obviously we are a lot nearer to it than they are at the moment so we have time to spare. What we need is some nice weather so we can complete our painting. B and B have cheated and done theirs in the tunnel at the boat yard!
