Day at Uppermill – Walk to Diggle

Friday 2nd September

We have stayed in Uppermill today and after a few chores this morning we all walked to Diggle to look at the tunnel. I was disappointed to discover the visitor centre is at Marsden, which is the other end of the tunnel. To go there on foot would have entailed a 3 mile walk over the hill so we decided to give it a miss! The tunnel entrance is very unimposing and I don’t know why but I was surprised by this. There were 3 boats there, one had come through this morning and the other two were waiting to go through this afternoon.

The walk to Diggle was very nice and the scenery is lovely up here. When we got to Diggle Barbara and I wanted to go to the loo. In the absence of a visitor centre, where I thought there would be toilets, we spotted a sign saying there were ‘community toilets’ in the Diggle Hotel. It was not open at that time but we found an open door at the side and found the loos. On the way out we were berated by a member of staff who said they weren’t open yet and someone had left the door open. What is the point of advertising community toilets if you can only use them when the pub is open? On the way back to Uppermill we stopped at a small canalside cafe and had tea and scones, very nice.

We took George to the pub this afternoon, actually we took him to two because there was a man with a dog outside The Waggon, which is where we wanted to go, so we stopped at the Granby Arms, next door, while we waited for him to go. It was a good job he did go because The Waggon has better beer and it is cheaper!

Tomorrow we are going to go to Mossley, where we are hoping to get in for the night. The moorings are a bit shallow there but at least there are plenty of them.
