Monday 26th September
We are in to an Indian summer (long may it continue) and today has been a lovely day, warm and mostly sunny. My wasp stings have finally stopped itching and all is right with the world!
We have travelled 6 miles and 6 locks from the Lion Quays at Moreton, on the Llangollen canal, to the Weston Branch of the Montgomery canal. This is what is left of the Weston Branch and is just a short arm with a few moorings and a sanitary station but it is very pleasant.
It took us 2 hours to get down the four locks at the start of the Montgomery. Here there is a staircase of 2, supervised by a very nice lock keeper and another 2 separate locks. When we arrived there were 5 boats in front of us going down and 4 boats coming up including the hotel boat and butty Oak and Ash, complete with a very irate ex-vicar in charge!
Eventually we finished the locks and moored here for the day. It was nice to be able to sit outside without needing a foil blanket or a tarpaulin! As this is not the towpath side even George had a lay on the grass in the sun!
Tomorrow we will explore the rest of the navigable part of this waterway, that is about another 6 miles.
