Saturday 15th October
Yesterday (Friday) we stayed on the moorings just outside Brewood and pottered about doing a bit of cleaning. Well, I did a bit of cleaning, someone else just did a bit of fishing! We walked back to the village at lunchtime (about 40 mins walk) and went to the newly refurbished Red Lion Hotel which was very nice. On the way back we got chatting to a chap who lives on a small cruiser and he said he wasn’t looking forward to the winter this year. I’m not surprised living on that thing! He had about 6 or 7 rolls of loft insulation strapped to the front of it and said he had some idea about using it in his boat. If he unrolled that lot and put it in the boat there wouldn’t be room for anything else!
It was very cold last night and there was a frost, brrrr! Hope the predictions for snow next week don’t come to fruition. It has subsequently been a cracking day though with almost wall to wall sunshine and no wind. We left Brewood quite early, by accident rather than by design. George got us up sooner than we would have liked this morning so we were ready to leave sooner than usual. When we got to Coven we went in to the village for a paper and found a rather good butchers where we got some beef dripping, bacon and sausages. We like to buy what we call ‘real’ sausages rather than supermarket ones when we can.
Lunchtime we took George to the Fox and Anchor, he had a lovely time laying in the sun on the decking. On the way back to the boat we met a chap we had seen last year when we stopped at Coven, the one with the Brummie accent and the friend with a loo for his dog in the garden. He had his wife and daughter with him this time and we had a nice chat with them all.
As it was still early afternoon when we got back and as it was such a nice day we decided to move on from Coven and have travelled to Gailey where we are now moored below the top lock. Tomorrow we are going to Penkridge.
