Saturday 17th March
We had a lovely day today. This morning we awoke to the sound of rain pattering on the roof so we were glad we had decided to stay at Crick. We went in to Rugby on the bus, (£3-40 for me, not bad). It took about 25 minutes to get there and during the journey we were advised by a nice lady where to get off the bus in Rugby and where we had to get back on to return to Crick. She was very helpful and got us a timetable from the driver as well.
Rugby is a nice town with all the usual shops (not many closed down like some places we have been) and a small market. There are 2 arcades and some lovely little back streets to explore.
We had a look at Rugby School (probably one reason why the town is doing so well) while we were there. It was opened in 1567, and has some very impressive buildings. The pupils (working on a Saturday) looked very smart in their uniforms. The girls were wearing long skirts and blazers, very demure.
After we had completed our tour and shopping, obviously the day would not have been complete without a foray in to the local Wetherspoon’s. And, handily, it was situated right near the bus stop, they think of everything! The Rupert Brooke is one of the lightest Wetherspoon’s we have been in (some can be a bit dark) and the service was excellent, unlike some pubs we have been in (and there have been many)!
After an afternoon of FA cup football interspersed with 6 Nations Rugby on the tv we went up to The Wheatsheaf in the village to sample the aforementioned chips and desserts, both of which proved to be very good. I can recommend the White Chocolate Roulade and the Blackberry Cheesecake. No I didn’t have 2 desserts, we had half of each one each!
As Sunday is a day of rest we will be staying at Crick again.
