Day at Denham

Sunday 29th April

Today the weather was not quite as bad as forecasted, it was not quite as wet as Saturday but a bit windier. Ken and I tried to encourage George to go for a walk as he hasn’t been anywhere since his operation but he wasn’t having any of it! So we decided to see if we could find Denham village and set off in the right direction. When we got to the visitor centre in the country park we made the fatal error of asking someone who had arrived by car which way it was to the village. They directed us up the road naturally and we got lost and ended up going all round the outskirts of the village until, after about an hour, we eventually stumbled upon the correct road to the centre.

The centre of Denham is indeed a quintessential old English village, very attractive (pity I had left my camera at home) and olde worlde. The 4 pubs (not open at the time) and the brasserie looked very nice but also very expensive judging by the prices on the displayed menus. We were unable to locate a shop to get a paper so we then had to walk all the way back to Uxbridge to get one from Tesco’s!

In total we were walking, in the rain, for over 2 hours and were glad to fall in to the Swan and Bottle, which is situated by Uxbridge Bridge, on the way back, for a pint and a rest. However, we wished we had stayed in Uxbridge and gone to the Wetherspoons again because the beer was rubbish and expensive so we had to go on the Guinness which was even more expensive at £3-75 a pint! But we had arranged to meet B and B there and any way we couldn’t be bothered to put all our waterproof gear back on and go back to Wetherspoons.

The rain had given way to showers by the time we walked back and eventually it stopped raining all together! We will be making some headway towards Brentford tomorrow.
