Burghfield to Reading – Moored near Reading Gaol.

Monday 28th May

After a dull start with a slight sprinkle of rain (yes really) it’s been another hot one today. As predicted we have just done the 3.5 miles and 3 locks from Burghfield to Reading and have stopped in the Chestnut Walk moorings, near the prison in Reading. That short journey took nearly 3 hours, mind you we weren’t hurrying ourselves.

We went to Boots when we got here and I purchased myself a new TENS machine because I have had my old one a long time now and sometimes I have to jiggle the wire to get it to come on. As I seem to be using it every day at the moment it would be a disaster if it packed up completely. The new one is very ‘space-age’ compared to the old one so I need to practice and get used to it!

We have also swept all the detritus off the roof which was deposited there during our stay under the trees at Burghfield! Unfortunately the whole boat needs a good clean, inside and out, but it’s too hot and I’m not up to it at the moment so that will have to wait!

I had a wander round Forbury Gardens this afternoon and took a few pictures of the abbey ruins that I could see from the path (they are closed to the public at the moment, too dangerous), the bit of the prison I could see and a rather strange sculpture as well.

Tomorrow we will go back on to the Thames, hoping for a shopping stop at Tesco’s, a water stop at Mapledurham Lock and a nice mooring some where.
