Napton to Braunston (for the weekend of the Historic Boat Rally) then to Newbold

Friday 22nd June to Monday 25th June

Friday the weather was not very good, it was very windy, although not as wet as we had thought it would be, so we stopped at Napton. All we really did was walk to the village and back along the towpath.

Saturday saw a real improvement in the weather so we headed for Braunston, 8 miles and 1 lock from Napton. We were told it was the Historic Boat Rally this weekend so to be on the safe side we moored near bridge 99, about a mile from the junction. As it happened this was a good move because there was absolutely nowhere to moor up any closer to Braunston.

We walked in to the village (taking about 30 mins) both days and went to the shop. On Saturday we also visited The Wheatsheaf and The Admiral Nelson, as you do. On Sunday we sat outside The Boathouse and watched the Historic Boat parade.

Today we have moved on 11 miles and the 3 locks at Hillmorton from Braunston to Newbold on Avon and are moored between bridges 51 and 50. We mistakenly moored in the Long Term Permit Holders moorings, we didn’t see the sign at first but found a space further up in the 14 day moorings so we moved, just in case the permit holder returned.

George had only been for a short toddle along the towpath yesterday so, as it was fairly close, we took him to The Barleymow this afternoon. It was really warm and even though Ken nearly did himself a mischief getting the (very complicated) parasol up so he had shade, George laid in the sun until he was panting, idiot! We met a chap there who said he kept all sorts of exotic pets, snakes and lizards etc.

This evening Ken has been fishing but I haven’t heard many shouts of jubilation from the back of the boat so I assume he hasn’t caught anything!

Tomorrow we are heading for Hawkesbury Junction.
