Alrewas to Fradley

Wednesday 13th March

I didn’t bore you with the minutae of today as we only went to Burton, did shop and pub (as usual) and came home. Mind you the bus fare nearly gave me a heart attack – £6-00 Day Saver from Arriva (saver?)!

Thursday 14th March

Today we have come 2 miles and 4 locks (we’re great at this endurance boating!) from Alrewas to Fradley and are moored opposite the water point. We waited for some boats to leave before we made a move this morning as there was about 3/4 in of ice on the canal and we want to keep our new blacking for a while! Despite it having been a really cold night it was a lovely sunny day with no wind, ideal for travelling and not cold at all.

After doing sanitary station duties and having some lunch we went for a walk along the Coventry Canal to Bridge 90 and back before repairing to The Black Swan for a couple of Abbotts. Here we met Alfie the Fox Terrier who took a shine to Ken’s glove, grabbing it and shaking it – unfortunately Ken’s hand was still in it at the time! Seriously, he was a lovely dog and only playing.

We were just about to have our dinner when there was a knock on the boat and the lady from the boat behind was there. She had come to tell us there was a peregrine falcon on our roof. We went out and sure enough there he was perched on one of our bags of coal. He let us get really close to him and I got some good photos. Marvellous.
