Another Day at Bulkington – And Another Trip to Nuneaton

Sunday 24th March

As you can see from the title of this post we haven’t moved on today. We did get up early (well, earlier than normal) with the intention of going but it was still snowing and windy. After a few seconds discussion we decided to stay where we were!

We then had to find something to do with ourselves. Obviously doing any outside jobs was out of the question! We thought we may as well have a day out on the bus. We decided to get the bus to Nuneaton where we could get another one to Hinckley. Neither of us has been to Hinckley and as it is looking unlikely we are going to get there by boat any time soon a bus trip seemed a good idea.

We got the 10 o’clock to Nuneaton and I got a Dayrider ticket, which only cost £4 as it was Sunday, because I was planning more than one journey. We arrived at Nuneaton at 10-25am to find that the Hinckley bus had left at 10-20am! With it being Sunday the buses only ran hourly. It was snowing and we didn’t fancy hanging around in the bus station for a hour so we thought we would go in the shopping mall to wait.

Then a thought struck me, what if the return buses ran at similarly inconvenient times? We may get back to Nuneaton from Hinckley and find we had just missed our connection and have another hour to wait before we could get the bus home. So we stayed at Nuneaton.

It wasn’t a very good day for walking round the shops because the pavements were lethal so we tried to stick to the malls. In the Ropewalk shopping centre there must have been a problem with the roof because it was snowing just as hard in there as it was outside!

We had a look in Trespass and found some ski gloves in the sale. With the weather being like it is and with no sign of improvement on the horizon we bought a pair each! I also got a pair of purple snuggly slippers from BHS. I bet you’re fascinated.

We have come to the conclusion that this canal would be a better proposition in nicer weather. We were talking to the chap who is moored up behind us this morning and he had just been up to Burton Hastings, a couple of miles from here. He said the amount of snow we’ve got here is nothing compared with what they’ve got there! The forecast doesn’t seem to be showing much improvement for next week either.

We need to get water, empty the loo, rubbish etc and the next sanitary station is about 10 miles from here, although there is a marina about 5 miles away. As we don’t really know what to expect up ahead we have decided to turn round, go back to the Coventry and get to Hawkesbury Junction. At least if we get stuck there for another 5 days we will be near the facilities.
