Wednesday 4th September
Today we have stayed at Weston and Ken got up at stupid o’clock (5 am) and went off for his fishing trip with Mick to the lake at the Cooper’s Arms. Obviously with Ken getting up early I had to get up too but I went back to bed after he had gone!
I finally got up very much later and did a few jobs before going down to the lake to see how Ken had got on. He had hay fever and a heat rash requiring a dose of piriton, bless. He had caught quite a few fish but nothing of any note so when I arrived (with the piritons) he packed up the fishing in favour of having a pint of Bass!
Mick had only caught one bream and carried on fishing for another hour, to no avail. They decided they hadn’t got the right bait, everyone else seemed to be using carp pellets. The fish weren’t interested in sweetcorn (especially not Mick’s strawberry flavoured sweetcorn), spam (especially not Mick’s chilli flavoured spam) or Ken’s maggots.
Ken’s day was then made even better when he was stung by a wasp! We returned to the boat and had tea and jam sandwiches! He has returned to canal fishing this evening and has already had more success than he did this morning.
We are a bit undecided as to what we are going to do next because of the predicted heavy rain for Friday. We were going to go down to Trent Lock but don’t want to spend a wet day there and then find we can’t get back because the river is in the red. Mick and Cathy also have to decide whether they are going to go on the River Soar or not. We would but we have done it loads of times before. This will be the first time they have been on a river (except the Trent at Alrewas!) so they are a bit anxious about it.
