Friday 13th December – Monday 16th December
Last Friday we went to Weston Supermare for a few days. It was a good trip despite the fact that our connection at Bristol was delayed due to signal failure, well it was Friday 13th!
We arrived at the hotel, The Grand Atlantic on the sea front, well before the 3 pm check in time and were surprised to find our room was ready to check in to. We had also been upgraded to a Superior Double with king sized four poster bed and spectacular views over Weston Bay.
It was slightly unfortunate however that the quilt on the king sized bed was not also king sized as we spent most of the weekend fighting over it! As the room was incredibly warm, despite turning off the radiators and opening the window, this did not matter too much!
The fact that the bed was a four poster turned out to be a bit of a Curate’s Egg. One of the posts obscured Ken’s view of the tv when he was laying in bed trying to watch the news in the mornings. I had to get up and move the tv so he could see or else have him laying in my lap! But it did come into it’s own when we got absolutely soaked on the way back to the hotel one evening though, making a very useful place to hang all our wet clothes overnight to dry!
We were going to have a trip to Cheddar on the Saturday but the weather conspired against us and we decided not to risk it just in case the gale force winds and driving rain started just as we reached the top! Instead we had a very pleasant walk round the local area taking in the pier, beach, sea wall, marine lake etc. We also had a wander round the town centre.
On the Sunday we spent some time watching the start and finish of the Weston Cracker fun run which began and ended at the pier. Everyone was in fancy dress with Santa and his elves very well represented. One of the more unusual costumes was a chap dressed as Mary, a very pregnant Mary! He was running with a group of friends and they were representing the nativity. There was also a chap dressed as a candle but most of his costume had disappeared by the time he got back! And we saw Santa riding a turkey!
Yesterday when we were leaving we had a lift incident. We decided to come down in the lift with our suitcase (we were on the second floor) and waited for it to arrive at our floor. When it opened there was already someone in it and being a particularly small lift we had to wait until they went down and sent the lift back up. When it arrived again we got in and pressed for the ground floor. It stopped and we got out – on the wrong floor! By the time we realised we were on the wrong floor two more people had got in with their cases so we couldn’t get in. We decided to go down the stairs and discovered we were now on the fourth floor. Had we have walked down in the first place it would have been quicker and not so far!
When we got to the foyer I marched up to the counter to hand the room key in and walked right in front of a man just as he was taking a photo of his wife with the inflatable Santa (why?) by the reception desk. I didn’t realise he was lining up a shot I thought he was texting, oops! As we walked away the receptionist said to him, ‘You always get one.’ Bloody cheek!
It may surprise you to learn we were nearly the youngest ones in the hotel (even Ken) with a coach party in for the weekend. We had a good time and a real laugh.
