Hasty Retreat Back To The Canal

Today dawned cold and frosty again and we didn’t feel like moving so we decided to stay at Sawey. We walked down to Derwent Lock to see how frozen the canal was and how high the river level was. The river was still in the amber.

There was a chap coming down the lock as we got there and he said the canal further up was quite thick with ice although he had managed to break it. When we got back to Sawley he was at the flood lock and he said the flow on the river was not too bad considering that it was in the amber.

We had a discussion about whether we were going to leave and still decided to stay. However, we subsequently changed our minds. We thought that with the impending thaw the river may come up again and we would be stuck at Sawley for longer.

We like Sawley and there are all the facilities we need there but we just get a bit restless if we stay in one place for too long. So this afternoon we set off and travelled 1 mile, through the flood lock and Derwent Lock and are now moored above the lock on the canal.

We have abandoned plans to go to Leicester at this time. We may move on tomorrow as it is going to be milder.
