Sunday 19th September
After another pleasant day at Nantwich yesterday, spent shopping and pubbing really, today we have moved 6 miles and 2 locks on to Audlem. We are moored on the aqueduct just outside the village. It has rained nearly all day again today, as usual and it has been breezy and pretty chilly too!
George was not interested in a walk as it was so wet so Ken and I went off to the village. We went in The Lord Combermere instead of The Shroppie Fly to start with, only to find there was a christening party going on! A little boy joined us at our table and tried to give Ken his piece of chocolate cake. Ken politely declined (I would have had it!) but the boy left it on the table and his Mum had to tell him to come back for it.
After one pint we headed back to The Shroppie Fly and discovered they had the football on in the back room. However, there was no where to sit in there so we watched it through the doorway until a young chap came and stood in the doorway, blocking our view! There was another couple in the bar with us and they were also trying to watch the football through an open alcove in the wall! We got chatting and discovered we had spoken to them before, when we had passed their moorings a few weeks ago.
On our way back to the boat we saw another couple we had met before, their boat is called Crystal Ball and they used to moor at Barrow On Soar. They were at Chester (and a few other places) when we were so we had a chat. They have just done the Langollen which we are going to start in the middle of next week. Apparently after Trevor it is rather shallow so we may not be able to get all the way to Langollen as we have quite a deep draught. We will be able to go over the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct though so that’s ok. Ken is scared of heights so I may have to drive us over while he hides up inside!
Peter and Tim are coming for a couple of days tomorrow and on Tuesday we are going to take them to The (not so) Secret Nuclear Bunker at Hack Green. Should be interesting.
