Newark to Torksey

Thursday 24th March

Another fab day weather wise, we really are lucky, it’s almost summery. Today we have travelled 22 miles and 3 locks from Newark, down the Trent to Torksey on the Fossdyke and Witham canal. The Trent is pretty dull it has to be said. If you go inside the boat for a while the scenery is still the same when you come back out again! But there is quite a lot of bird life to look at and as I said the weather was great.

The most exciting thing to happen was meeting a gravel barge. It was huge and going at a fair old lick too! Other than that it was pretty monotonous.

When we got to Torksey it was 4pm and as the lock was about to close for the night we were allowed to moor on the water point over night along with a huge yoghurt pot. As we came in to moor one either end of them (yoghurt pots always moor right in the middle of any space) we were watched very carefully in case of an expensive bump! Bless.

The White Swan in Torksey was our next stop for the first drink of the day at about 4-30pm! It was nice to be able to sit outside for an hour in warm sunshine. George was glad to come out having been virtually alone all day while we were cruising. He was also glad of the close proximity of the grass after the long trek along the pontoon moorings and then no grass in Newark!

Tomorrow we are going up to Lincoln and if there is any where to moor we will stay. If not we will turn round and go back to Saxilby. Then we can go into Lincoln by bus or train on Saturday.
