Thursday 31st March
What a day! Talk about windy, it’s really gale force! When we left Thorne this morning it was not too bad, quite pleasant in fact but suddenly the wind started to get up and by the time we got to Bramwith swing bridge (4.5 miles and 1 lock from Thorne) it was really gusty.
We stopped to get water and by the time we had both done that it was apparent that carrying on would be stupid. The wind is coming straight down the canal here but it is gusting very strongly and after the next lock (assuming we could moor up to do it) we have to turn right which would then mean having a cross wind making it very difficult to travel in a straight line!
So a decision was made to stay here and see if the wind dropped. It has, in fact, got worse! We nearly lost our satellite dish – again! It sailed off the roof even though it was lying down and was attatched to a pole. The pole went as well! However, the connection on the cable held this time and we were able to pull it out. It is now bungeed to something to prevent a repeat performance!
The waves on the canal are about 2ft high, I kid you not, it’s like being on the sea, with real breakers! I don’t do sea so I hope it calms down soon.
It is lovely and sunny (no clouds could stay with this wind) and it would be warm if it wasn’t so windy. Here’s hoping for a calmer day tomorrow.
