Saturday 2nd April
Today it was quite windy again and there was rain forecast so we decided, as we haven’t got to be in Leeds until Thursday for Barbara to meet her daughter, we would stay at Pollington.
As it turned out the rain never materialised so Ken sorted out his fishing gear and I did some cleaning. Barbara got Barry to black their fire. She thought ours, which is 2 years old, looked better than theirs, which is only 3 months old. I didn’t think ours looked that good but anyway, Barry blacked theirs. Of course, now theirs looks so pristine and ours looks so scabby I will have to do ours!
Later on Ken and I walked to Great Heck, about 2.5 miles along the canal. Here we happened upon The Bay Horse Inn, what a surprise! We sampled some beers from the Old Mill Brewery, Snaith, which is just up the road and very nice they were too.
On the way back we were passed by a Humber tanker which was very big! When we got to Pollington Lock it was in there and took up nearly the whole width but not the length because, as you can see from the photos, Pollington lock is very long. In fact it has three sets of gates for different lengths. There were a couple of yoghurt pots waiting to go in the lock and they were almost in the path of this tanker as it came out. They should have waited on the other side of the lock approach really. The driver had to do a bit of manouvreing in order not to crush them, not easy with his size! He also did a lot of shouting and gesticulating!
If the weather holds we will move on to Knottingley/Ferrybridge tomorrow but more wind and showers are forecast.
