Hassall Green to Wheelock

Wednesday 27th July

We have travelled another 2 miles (although I must have walked about 4!) and 10 locks from Hassall Green to Wheelock. It has been very warm today although not sunny all the time. We were following another boat so I had to fill all the locks, with the exception of one where we met someone coming towards us. We were, of course, being followed and as I am so nice (?) I was doing a lot of back filling for them or filling the adjacent lock if there were 2 working. So I actually did 10 whole locks for us and 10 half locks for them!

When we got to Wheelock we moored up and walked to Sandbach, another 3 mile round trip. Sandbach is a nice town and must be very affluent as it sustains, among various other shops – a Francesco’s hairdressers (very expensive as I found out in Stone last year!) and a Speciality Grocer/Cheese/Tea and Coffee Emporium. If you sit in the market square, where the ancient crosses are, you can see 7 of the 14 pubs in the town! We only went to 2 of them though as we had to walk back to the boat. Mind you we could have got the bus, hmmm ……….

This afternoon and evening we have again been sitting out on the bank people and dog watching. We have also been wildlife watching (rabbits, jays and magpies) and fish watching (sticklebacks eating the boat).

Tomorrow we are going to Crewe because my dongle runs out on Sunday and I know you would all be bereft if I couldn’t do my blog so I need to get another one and Crewe is the nearest place we can get to that has a 3 Store.
