Wheelock to Paddy’s Wood and a trip to Crewe

Thursday 28th July

We have come a great distance this afternoon – all of 1 mile from Wheelock to Paddy’s Wood (you remember, no trees) just to escape the crowds of boats and walkers. However, just when we thought we were going to be on our own another boat has moored here. There is a huge amount of room to moor along here, miles in fact but they haven’t just moored near us, no they are right behind us! You expect people to moor right behind or in front of you in town/village moorings where space is at a premium but not in the middle of the country! Ho hum!

Anyway enough of my moanings. This morning we went off on the bus to Crewe which was a pleasant 20 min journey (still £3-70 though). We had a few things to do including going to the fishing tackle shop. We looked the address up on the internet and walked there fairly quickly, didn’t get lost or go the wrong way (as we usually do) only to find it had closed down and was now a residential property! We should have then gone back the way we had come but we didn’t and ended up taking a rather circuitous route back to the town centre. At least we had a walk.

I spotted a sale in Milletts and took himself in for some new trousers, which he got at a greatly reduced price. I then raided the sale rail and we also came away a couple of tops for him, a couple of sweatshirts and a fleece for me. 6 items for less than £70 I can’t resist a bargain! It has been really warm today but I don’t expect it will be long before we will need the sweatshirts and the fleece!

I also got a good deal in the 3 Store because instead of having to buy a new dongle as I had to last year, this time I only had to buy the sim which cost me £50 instead of £80 for my year’s internet useage, bonus!

Crewe is a nice town and the shopping centre is excellent. There are some funny people there though and we spent a happy hour or so sitting outside the Wetherspoon’s, (handily placed adjacent to the bus station by the way), watching them, hilarious!

When we got back to Wheelock we decided to make a move. First we had to get water, empty loo etc so we moved to the sanitary station moorings. There are 2 taps and we managed to get in near one of them. There was a Black Prince hire boat moored near the other one with no crew or hose in evidence. Probably gone to the shop or the pub, bless! The bloke who tried to get in after us was not very happy! He had to wait for us to finish then back up, hope the hire crew didn’t come back before he had finished!

So here we are at Paddy’s Wood, Ken is fishing but all he can get are gudgeon! Middlewich tomorrow then.
