Day at Gurnett Aqueduct

Tuesday 23rd August

It has been a lovely warm day again today and as it was only just over a mile to walk in to Macclesfield that is what we did. Ken and Barry disappeared off to the fishing tackle shop when Barbabra and I went in to M&S. Actually I only went in there to go to the loo but obviously we got side tracked! I am amazed at the amount of times Ken has to go to the tackle shop but I suppose he is equally amazed at the number of times I have to go to M&S! I controlled myself really well only buying a bra in the sale for £9 (bargain, couldn’t resist). I would have bought a nice t shirt I saw on the sale rail on the way in but by the time I had been to the loo and come back it had gone, should have taken it with me!

After going to the tackle shop Ken went to River Island and bought himself a nice pair of deck shoes, that being the sole purpose (the sole purpose get it?) of this visit. By that time I had dived into the Bon Marche sale and Barbara phoned to find out where the chaps were. As it happened they were just across the street and came and stood outside Bon Marche to harass us into hurrying up!

We then went to a couple of other shops and finally to the Wetherspoons, as you do, before walking back via the chandlery at Freedom Boats. I needed a longer windlass because the locks on the Marple flight are quite hard and I think a longer one will help, hopefully.

People are funny, when they pass your boat they make all sorts of comments and they really think you can’t hear them. This evening a family were approaching and seeing the Beware of the Bull Terrier sign in the front said, ‘Oh they’ve got a bull terrier.’ When they clocked George asleep in the cratch they said, ‘That’s not a bull terrier.’ Poor old George he does his best to look like a bull terrier!

This afternoon Barbara has very kindly turned up a pair of my trousers for me. I can’t sew to save my life and was waiting until I could find some where that did alterations quickly. There was a place on the market at Northwich but she said it would take a week and we were gone before they would have been ready. I have another pair that want doing but they were in the wash, hopefully Barbara will do them as well!

Tomorrow we are off to Marple, hope we can get in.
