Great Haywood to Wood End Lock (Near Fradley)

Wednesday 19th October

Wednesday the wind had died down but it was still fairly cold and we moved up from Tixall Wide to the junction at Great Haywood. We were able to moor right on the end just as we came round the turning at the junction. It is not a bad spot as it has quite an open aspect and the canal is wide there too.

We went to the Canalside Farm Shop which has been vastly improved since we last went there. It is not too expensive but sells some really good stuff. We got some lovely belly pork slices from the butchery and some locally grown veg. I resisted the draw of the fancy cakes but did succumb to a couple of tea cakes. After this we went in to the village for a paper.

Later on we took George to the Clifford Arms, where he is allowed in. It is a busy pub doing lots of food but still has a ‘local’ feel to it. One of the stock beers there is Adnams Broadside which we like.

Thursday 20th October

Thursday we went to Stafford again on the bus. Still £5-20 but for only a 20 min journey this time!

Friday 21st October

Today we have travelled 11 miles and 2 locks from Great Haywood to Wood End Lock about a mile from Fradley. It has been a dull but mild day and the trip was pleasant. There were quite a few boats about including several Shakespeare Classic Line ones from Willington. Obviously we are not far from there now.

On the way we stopped at Rugeley to go to Morrison’s and of course we went to Wetherspoon’s as well! As we are not over keen on the moorings in Rugeley we moved on later. It is nice here, there are some boats moored opposite but none appear to be occupied.

We haven’t decided what to do tomorrow yet.
