Thurmaston to Aylestone

Monday 12th March

We are under way! After spending 20 minutes reversing out of the back water this morning, when we got into Thurmaston Lock, Ken had to go down the weed hatch and clear half the contents of Primark off the prop! A sign of things to come? We hope not!

In spite of the rubbish in and around the canal (see photographic evidence) the rest of the journey was quite uneventful and we have come about 7 miles and 7 locks to King’s Lock, Aylestone where we are moored for the night. In the past we have done the whole journey from Thurmaston to Kilby Bridge (or vice versa) in one hit, usually taking about 8 hours but at the moment the locks between King’s Lock and Kilby Lock are on a time restriction and are only open between 10 am and 2 pm, so we will finish the journey to Kilby Bridge tomorrow.

After we moored up Ken and I went in search of a paper shop (pub) and were not disappointed, we found a newsagents and a Coop and 2 pubs! The Old Black Horse is to be recommended as is the newsagents, except for the fact that they didn’t have the I!

It has been dull and rather chilly all day but the sun seems to be putting in an appearance this evening making it a very pleasant end to proceedings. It is nice to be on the bank again after the marina and the back water at MGM. Later on George and I will be benefitting from the new light Ken has finally put up in the cratch, hopefully making it easier for us to see to get on and off in the dark, hurrah!
