Aylestone to Kilby Bridge

Tuesday 13th March

Today we have travelled just over 5 miles and 9 locks from King’s Lock to Kilby Bridge, taking about 4.5 hours. It has been a bit warmer than it was yesterday but there has been no sun!

Although we had heard reports of there being no water in the canal in Leicester the only really shallow bit we found was between King’s Lock and Blue Bank Lock, where we were scraping the bottom a bit at times. The rest of the journey was unaffected by low water levels.

On arrival at Kilby Bridge we were surprised to find there were no other boats moored there. Ken and I took George for a toddle to The Navigation where he received quite a bit of fuss from the customers who were gathered to watch the racing at Cheltenham. We had a lovely pint of Speckled Hen before realising they did Adnam’s Broadside as well! Had I realised George hadn’t reviewed this pub when we came here about 2 and a half years ago I would have taken a picture for his blog but I didn’t, sorry! Suffice to say he likes it and so do we.

When we returned from the pub a couple of other boats had joined us on the moorings, a hire boat from Napton and a Canaltime from Market Harborough. The couple from the Canaltime boat were in the pub and we heard them telling the landlord they were from Minnesota, which you are no doubt fascinated to learn!

Wednesday we are going to get to Foxton.
