Branston to weston – via Shobnall, Willington and ragley Boat Stop

In the last week we have travelled from Branston to Weston. We stopped one night at Shobnall Fields after leaving Branston last Tuesday (16th) than moved on to Willington where we stayed from Wednesday until Sunday.

During that time we took advantage of the mild weather to let the fire go out and we cleaned the chimney. I also had another haircut. We went shopping in Burton on Friday hoping to get all we needed for Xmas (still we went to Asda at Sinfin on Sunday!)

On Saturday we went in to Burton again to visit the fishing tackle shop and to watch football in The Locomotive. This is a recently opened sports bar in the town centre and very handy it is too.

The Derby v Norwich match was on half the screens and the Man City match was on the other half. I was the only Norwich fan in the pub and fortunately Norwich managed to get a draw.

Having waited for the stoppages at Weston and Shardlow locks to be completed, Sunday we started our journey to Sawley and moved to Ragley Boat Stop. We hadn’t planned to stop there we had planned to go straight to Weston but Mick and Cathy, who had decided to go to Ragley for Xmas, were coming out of the marina on Sunday so we said we would share Stenson Lock with them.

Then it was suggested that we should stop at Ragley so we could all go for a meal Sunday night so that is what we did. We had a good evening although the food was mediocre as usual. We had a laugh when a table of 8 rather large people arrived and Ken said it was the Weight Watchers Xmas party!

Despite the strong wind today we have moved on to Weston. It is 4.5 miles and 1 lock from Ragley and we negotiated it well including a water stop at Swarkestone.

After mooring up we went in search of a post box in the village and then went to The Coopers Arms. It was packed with pre-xmas lunchers as is to be expected at this time of year.

It is still windy tonight and forecast to be so tomorrow as well but we are hoping to get to Sawley.
