Saturday 26th March
Today it was FREEZING after the lovely warm weather of the past week! Good job we weren’t cruising, the wind would cut you in half.
We went in to Lincoln on the bus. A 15 minute journey which, for those of us not in possession of a bus pass, cost £3-90 return, not bad.
Lincoln is a very nice city with places of interest eg cathedral, castle, glory hole etc and all the usual shops. We went up the steep hill, called Steep Hill funnily enough, to the cathedral. A very impressive building of course. Not being serious tourists we didn’t pay to go in, just looked at the free bits! Then we went for a walk round the outside. Quite a lot of it was shrouded in scaffolding as there is some cleaning and restoration work going on.
We also walked along the canal to look at the Glory Hole, where the waterway goes underneath a street of shops. There is also a millennium sculpture over the canal here. We had a look round the market and got a bargain cauliflower for 80p (the last one we bought, on Newark market, was £1-50 and half the size!) and a couple of bacon cobs.
Next stop was Brayford Pool, home of Lincoln Marina and where we turned round yesterday when we came up by boat. As luck would have it there was a Wetherspoon’s overlooking it, just the place to warm up and wait for the bus back! The people watching opportunities were many fold here I can tell you, we had a lovely time!
Back at the boat we had a cuppa with B and B and planned our return trip to Torksey tomorrow, not a very long journey so we don’t have to leave until early afternoon. Pity the weather has taken a turn for the worst otherwise we could have done something useful to the boat.
I also phoned the lock keeper at Keadby to find out what time we need to leave Torksey on Monday to get there at the right state of the tide to get through the lock off the Trent onto the Stainforth and Keadby Canal and unfortunately it’s 7-30am, aaargh I’ll have to set the alarm!
